Home Baker to Wholesale: the Secrets to Start and Grow your Food Business
Let's be honest. Starting a baking business is tough. First of all, you have to come up with the recipe, then you need to figure out where and when you're going to sell it. Unsure where to begin? Overwhelmed? Starting a business is hard, and growing it can be even harder. But with a few secrets you can make it a little easier.
Let's do it together.
When I first started my business, Rustic Donut, I had no idea what I was doing. I wanted to sell my vegan donuts, but didn't know how to get started or the right steps to take. There was no map to follow and certainly no one to guide me along the right path. No one I knew was in the food industry, and everyone was like, "good luck, that sounds awesome, but I can't help you." Sigh.
Fortunately, there's Google and lots of books on the subject on how to start a baking business, but the resources I found were either too vague, too detailed (hello, business plan!), or told from a point of view that I couldn't relate to.
I wished there was just one place for everything - where I could learn how to start and grow my home baking business - without having to do hours of endless research and wasting a ton of time. Instead, I had to learn everything on my own - the hard way.
With zero experience in the food industry and nothing more than a marketing background and a massive will to succeed, I was able to grow Rustic Donut from just an idea into a profitable business.
Now you can do it too.
In this book, I'll show you the steps I took to start my business, the mistakes I made along the way (so you don't have to), and the exact scripts I used that catapulted my business from home bakee to wholesale. You'll also get small homework assignments in each chapter so you can put your plans into action right away.

Who am I?
I'm Jenni, the owner and founder of Rustic Donut, a vegan wholesale bakery in northern Colorado. I have a background in marketing, mostly advertising. I always wanted to work for myself, but didn't have the guts to do it. Something always got in the way - um, fear, mostly - and I would always have a great business idea, only to stall out and let it fade off into the distance.
That was until I became vegan and craved vegan donuts. The sad thing was, they didn't exist. Only the ones in my area at the time were fried in animal fat, and contained god-only-knows what kind of ingredients, along with animal ingredients. So I created vegan ones made without artificial ingredients, colors, preservatives or hydrogenated oil.
My first attempts were really bad, and it took me a very long time (read several months of serious failures) to finally come up with a recipe that was edible, and of course delicious. Once I tested them on friends and family who were not vegan (and who loved them) I knew my mission was to share vegan donuts with the world.
But how? I didn't have a business plan, I didn't want to take out a loan, and I didn't have anyone help me (since no one I knew was in the food industry). I was literally on my own and had to learn everything the hard way - through endless research failing numerous times.
Since 2015, I've slowly grown Rustic Donut organically and with intention. From starting out at teeny farmer's market and now selling to coffee shops, grocery stores and beyond. I'm by no means an expert, but I do have the experience to show you how to do everything I did, and hopefully keep you away from the pitfalls I fell into when starting and growing my baking business.
