Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Coffee Smoothie

In case you couldn't guess, I have a sweet tooth, but I also like to use healthier ingredients when enjoying a sweet treat. This smoothie delivers. It has dates, banana, peanut butter, cocoa and almond milk coffee. Perfectly sweet, a little healthy and definitely delicious.

Although they aren't mentioned in the name of this smoothie, the dates are the star of this recipe. Since they're naturally sweet, you can add them with abandon to your smoothies for added healthiness.

Typically, using dates in a smoothie requires a bit of patience since you have to soak them for at least 10 minutes until they are soft, then drain them, then chop them up, etc, etc, so I prefer to go the easy route and buy the pre-packaged date logs from Sprouts (or I'm sure you can get them just about anywhere).

These little sweet logs of soft date sugar-free deliciousness are rolled in coconut with an almond on top. They are great for snacks or in this case, this smoothie. Since they have a soft texture, they blend pretty well, but if you're like me and don't have a high powered blender, be prepared to encounter little chewy bits of dates as you sip your smoothie (straw not recommended).

In place of plain almond milk in this recipe, I used the cold brew coffee almond milk blend from Califia Farms. This is stuff is like crack. It's coffee, almond milk and cocoa all mixed into one glorious drink. I go through a huge bottle of it about twice a week and stock up so I never run out. It's. That. Good. and adds a nice caffeinated kick and creaminess to smoothies, your morning coffee, or just by itself in a glass.

There's peanut butter in this smoothie too. Don't even get me started on how much I love peanut butter. There's something about adding it to smoothies that takes them to a whole new level of bliss.

Note: recipe adapted from Minimalist Baker.

1 large frozen ripe banana (peeled and sliced into smaller chunks)
2 T peanut butter (use salted, unsalted, natural, whatever you like)
1-2 date rolls from Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, or King Soopers now carries them!
1 T unsweetened cocoa powder
1 to 1 1/2 cups Califia Farms Double Espresso Pure Cold Brew Coffee (use more or less depending on how thick you like your smoothie)

  1. Blend all ingredients in a blender.
  2. Taste and adjust flavors.
  3. Add ice if you want your smoothie thicker.
  4. Enjoy!
